Propositions and Jessie James

I live in California, the greatest state in the United Sates of America. But California has major problems. I believe many of our problems stem from the people that govern our state. By proxy, it is our fault. The citizens of this state elect their representatives. We have a say in the way our state is run. In fact, this is one of the key problems.

In California we have a proposition system that allows the citizens of this state a chance to pass laws directly. While this sounds like a great idea to many, consider this. Instead of trusting in our representative democracy, we vote on issues like confusing insurance regulations, immigration policy, and complicated property laws. I’m not a lawyer or politician, but I try to be well informed when it comes to politics in our state. Yet come every election, I struggle to figure out what we are voting on, who is backing/funding it, and the ramifications of these decisions. For an informed voter, it is tough to wade through the legalize and political spin.

I can only assert that at some point, our elected officials lost the trust of the people of California. Here is my question.

If the people of our state can’t elect competent honest representatives, what makes us think we can cast informed votes on complex issues?
From Twitter

If the people we elect aren’t qualified to make these hard decisions, then why are they working for us? We need to fire them and elect new representatives. It’s scary to think that important issues are decided by folks whose daily reading consists of latest news with Jessie James and Sandra Bullock.
