In response to some of my twitter buds like Dana Pellerin, Luke Mundy, and Gene Pensiero. I am posting a couple of screen caps of my desktop. These pics are of my laptop which is a 15 inch 2.4 GHz Macbook Pro.

Yes, my wallpaper is black. I like to keep it clean. It keeps me focused on the task at hand. I have to give props to Merlin Mann for a lot of my setup. He describes his setup in detail to Leo Laporte in this old Mac Break video. I am using a couple of apps to a achieve this clean slate.
The first app is called Backdrop, and it’s name is descriptive of what it does. Backdrop gives you a wallpaper that can be in between, in front of, or behind your apps and/or desktop. I have been using black as my desktop for a while but you could use a picture or any color if you so desire.
So where is your menu bar Bob? It’s hidden by a little app called Menu Eclipse. This app will fade or hide the menu bar and will allow it to re-appear when you mouse over it.
My dock is also hidden but no special app is required to achieve this. Simply go to your System Settings and click on the Dock settings and set it to automatically hide and appear.
The last app that I use to keep my workspace neat and clean is Spirited Away. Spirited Away automatically hides an inactive open application after a predetermined amount of time. The application that has focus stays visible.
This is a setup I have used for about a year and it has helped me minimize clutter and distractions. I know it’s not for everyone, but it works for me.
